YOU Season 2 – Eps 1

“YOU” has recently begun its second season. Here is our review on its first episode.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

“YOU”, the Netflix series, has gained some attention after its thrilling first season where we met Joe Goldberg, the seemingly “good guy” with a past that shaped him and secrets he tried to bury.

The second season begun with a recap on Guinevere Beck, how Joe “did what he had to do for love”, and Beck’s distrust towards him. To him, he had made a mistake in choosing and loving Beck. And of course, the previous season left us with the cliffhanger of Candace’s unexpected return. We have yet to have a full explanation of Joe’s history with Candace. However, judging from Joe’s expression and Candace’s own words, he had surely thought she was dead.

As the trailers clearly showed, this second season is set in Los Angeles. We are greeted with Joe’s usual narration, this time about how we wanted a fresh start without love, among sharing his critiques towards the lifestyle of LA.

Joe, who introduced himself as Will Bettelheim, rents a place from Delilah on the second floor and immediately sets a telescope facing the window. Knowing him, it’s probably not going to be used for stargazing. This time, he tells us that he is going to take control, not letting what happened repeat itself.

Following Candace’s appearance in the season finale, she sat down with Joe and claims that she knows what he had done. From the flashbacks and how nervous Joe looks, she surely does. Could Candace be the fear Joe needs to stop his tricks and plans? She threatened to destroy him as Joe runs away and begins his journey to LA. Candace is clearly back for revenge and we will definitely be seeing more of her throughout the season.

Trying to adjust to his new life, Joe meets Ellie, younger sister to Delilah, who could possibly be the new Paco in this season. Their relationship improves through the episode from a rocky start to Joe taking advice from Ellie about joining social media.

Joe had been accepted for a job in Anavrin, a store he had shown a dislike towards in the beginning. After his job interview, he notices Love for the first time. Unlike Beck, Love immediately catches Joe by surprise with her spontaneity and fearlessness. While signing up for a driver’s license, he bumps into Love again, who he had also learned was his coworker. From there, we start to see the old Joe return as he looks her up online, deciding to create a social media account. After getting his friend request accepted by Love, he realizes that her status said that she was married. This was one of the first curveballs as we could all tell that Love was showing interest in Joe as well.

Later that day, Love visits Joe to help with his sunburn. She then took him to multiple places in an attempt to find his “perfect bite”. We then got a narration by Love and her description of Joe, which he agreed with. Love had brought such a sudden impact that Joe very quickly admits his mistake about her not knowing him. During his encounter with his “perfect bite”, she tells him about her marriage and her husband who died from an illness. This brings the question on why her status still said she was married. Among other chances, it could be a sense of fear or protection towards future relationships. But she had decided to open up to Joe, a complete stranger she had just met.

Love was not the only one changed. His time with her had changed Joe’s perspective towards LA into a slightly better one. Love had shown a similarity to Joe in a “takes one to know one” way where the had both felt real love and real loss.

The episode then concluded with something that showed us how much Joe hasn’t changed. In a garage was a replica of the glass box he had in the previous season, with a man locked in it. Other than that, we learn that Joe had planned everything so far. What we saw was not the first time he saw Love and he had planned everything from his new job to the second floor that, with the telescope, gave him a clear view of Love.

This first episode had shown us how similar and different things could be with Love to what happened with Beck ad possibly Candace. Stay tuned for our review on the next episode!
